This Brave Little Boy Is Still Smiling After Surviving Meningitis That Claimed His Leg, Toes, And Fingers
About 11 months ago, Taylor Marshall was born a healthy baby boy. But this past April, his mom, Terri, knew something was wrong when she woke up in the middle of the night and noticed he had a fever and was shivering. So she took him in for emergency care.
At the hospital, Taylor seemed to be feeling much better. A few hours later, though, Terri said Taylor took a sudden turn for the worse.
"He wouldn't eat or drink...and when I noticed his face turning blue I called for an ambulance," Terri explained. "His whole body was shutting down and his face and limbs were turning black."
Taylor had contracted Meningococcal Septicaemia Type W meningitis and was told that the only thing the doctors could do was put him in a coma and hope that he made it through.
"The rash quickly spread all over his tiny body and doctors warned us that he might not make it," Terri remembered. "So I had the difficult task of calling all of our family to come and say their goodbyes."
Despite the grim doctors' warning, Taylor started to show signs of improvement two and a half weeks later. But the illness was so severe that Taylor's kidneys failed, which forced him to receive emergency dialysis treatment. On top of that, Taylor had to go through a knee amputation and have his fingers and toes removed in order to survive.
"It was horrifying but all I cared about was him surviving so I tried my best to stay positive," Terri said.
Although Taylor's family was devastated that he lost so much to meningitis, they are relieved that their little hero made it through the operations and beat the odds. Even though Taylor will need to stay in the hospital until November for skin grafts, Terri says Taylor refuses to let his illness keep him down.
"It was just a few weeks ago that I was told to say my final goodbyes to him," Terri said. "Taylor has amazed doctors with his fighting spirit and despite everything, he is still smiling. He's such an inspiring little baby and I'm so proud of him."
Taylor's family hopes to raise money through their fundraiser page to help pay for the costs of treatment.
