Jody Watley 1959年2月30日出生於芝加哥。最初以舞者身分出現於電視節目"Soul Train"，1977到1984年間，曾是樂團"Shalamar"的一員。個人首張專輯"Jody Watley"發行於1984年，共產生了"Looking for a new love"、"Don't you want me"，以及"Some kind of lover"三首Top 10單曲。Jody Watley以首張同名專輯"Jody Watley"獲得該年的葛萊美最佳新進藝人大獎。
